It was was a beautiful Saturday here in South Florida so I decided to take advantage of the Broward Transit System, otherwise know as the bus. This also seemed like a good time to try a new Slow cooker recipe for Corned Beef and Cabbage. So let's see how the day went.
After having a light breakfast, I cut up some onions, potatoes and carrots and placed in the bottom of one of my slow cookers. I then put the Corned Beef on the top with the fat side up, sprinkled on the seasoning package, added about 3 cups of water and turned on high.
It is now almost 10am and time to go out front and catch the bus. I have plenty of time since it will take about 8 hours to cook the Corned Beef. One of the nice things about living in this area is the bus service. I have been told by some that it is not the best, but believe me it is better than no bus service at all. One of the great things about the bus in this area is the cost. An all day pass cost $4 for regular riders and $3 for Seniors. Click Here to see a map of my almost 50 mile round trip up and down the East coast of Florida from Hollywood to Pompano Beach.
There is not a lot to see on the first part of the trip which goes up US 1 through the Hollywood-Ft Lauderdale airport and into Ft Lauderdale. At Las Olas Blvd things change including the bus. Here you can change to the #11 for the rest of the trip, or get off and walk for a while which is what I did. There are many restaurants and shops along Las Olas, Click Here to see, and it is a very nice area to shop and spend time. The next few pictures I took along my walk before continuing my trip by bus.
As you can see it is a very nice place to spend some time. There are plenty of shops and the food is great. Now it is time to get back on the bus and continued over to Ft Lauderdale Beach. A very nice feature is the fact you can get off and on as much as you want. If you see something you would like to see, get off and walk back a block and spend some time, then get on the next bus going your way, or you can just make a note of where you want to get off on your return trip home.
This a couple of pictures of Ft Lauderdale Beach. As you can see since it is Spring Break, there are a lot of people, to many for me to get off and try to get in and out of the shops, I will leave that for a trip in itself.
Here we are at Atlantic and A1A where they are setting up for a Saint Patrick's Day party. There are 3 or 4 blocks of shops and restaurants by the beach.
Also you will find a fishing pier and a beachside restaurant.
It is time to get a late lunch and head back home. I have taken more side trips than I expected on the trip up, so on the next long trip I will just take notes on the way up and make my stops on the way back.
The Corned Beef is done. When I arrived home the Corned beef was ready to fall apart and the vegetables were done. I removed the meat and vegetables, cut up a small head of cabbage and boiled it in the broth. It was good.
Now for the day, I ate lunch on my trip for about $7, my all day bus pass cost $3, I used no gas, paid no parking fee, didn't have to fight any traffic, all for $10.
Dinner was waiting when I got home and cost more than the rest of the day.
